The hazards of dukes selling to plebs........

An eBay bid of nearly £5m for a car made famous by TV show The Dukes of Hazzard appears to have been fraudulent.

Actor John Schneider, who played the blond heartthrob Bo Duke in the 1980s TV series, put his General Lee car up for grabs on the popular auction website.

The winning bid of £4.96m ($US9.9m) set a record late last week but it now appears to be a hoax.

The buyer, identified on his eBay home page as William Fisher or "fishbashr1", has failed to return e-mails or answer phone calls.

I wonder why the guy changed his username?  You think maybe he does not have five million beer tokens after all?  Then again, he could just be on holiday or busy arranging shipping.

    I would bet my dog that most bidders in that auction were only bidding to push the price up. Anybody know if the next highest bidder actually had the cash? I doubt it, he probably shit himself when he got the second chance offer!

    Now that the dust has settled this whole thing looks like a publicity stunt.

    First, even if they high bidder (the artist formerly known as fishbashr1) did bid for fun, why not just give the next highest bidder a second chance? Or the next highest if he/she was also screwing around? All this talk of suing the guy is bullshit, if he was the only one making bad bids then it would never have got to half a million, nevermind nearly ten. How many of the (at least)54 bidders were genuine? Look at the bidding history;
    (half way down this fantastic page)

    Bidder 52 jumped from 2.8 to 9.9 million in two minutes! Genuine? I doubt it.

    Second, why sell something that is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars (not millions though) on Ebay? That is just f*cking asking to be spcammed! (no, stan, not a typo!) Why not use a verified auction house and just tell the news sites about it?

    Third, about the charity donations? First we heard the sale was to raise money for another crappy cash in film (wouldnt he need the car for that?) then some of it was for charity, now it seems that all of it is for charity!

    And finally, the relisted auction did not even make its reserve of 100,000 dollars.
